Biography[]
Television series[]
Bernie was shocked to find that the prized fishes in his pond had been poisoned shortly before the village's open garden competition.
He and Mary Fortune previously discussed on singing and music, as she was a former singer herself. Fed up with Mary's constant belittling and criticism of aspiring musician Bernice Chilton, whom Bernie was mentoring, he strangled Mary with a guitar string before potting her body head first in a flower pot among her plants in her garden, to prevent Mary telling what she thought of Bernice’s singing. Bernie seemed to not know, however, that Mary was responsible for the vandalized gardens and for his poisoned fishes.
Bernie continued to mentor and encourage Bernice for a first opening concert held at the White Horse. When searching Mary’s cottage, Agatha find out that Mary was spying on her daughter’s boyfriend and first suspected him, then backfired at Bernie, because of Mary’s attitude towards Bernice and Bernie’s constant protection. Accompanied by Bill Wong, she confronted Bernie and provoked him by saying Bernice was a terrible singer to make him betray himself. When Agatha threatened to "tell everything" to Bernice, Bernie grabbed a shovel but was stopped by Bill, before literally vomiting his hatred of Mary and her being a constant bully with Bernice. Bernie was then arrested by the police. (TV: The Potted Gardener)
Book series[]
Bernard was chocked to find that the prized fishes in his pond had been poisoned shortly before the village’s opening garden day.
Mary Fortune had previously tried to seduce him, then mocked him when Bernard fell in the trap. He threatened to tell everyone, but eventually didn’t, as he would face criticism because of his age. In addition of that, Bernard recognized her in his garden the night his fishes were poisoned. As he considered the fishes as his own family in a very twisted way, he planned to kill Mary.
Bernard went to Mary’s place to have a drink and distracted her by inventing something outside. While Mary was looking by the window, Bernard poisoned her drink with herbicide. He stared at her while she was dying, then cleaned up the vomit and the glasses, wiped his fingerprints from the bottle, then picked Mary’s body to the Winter Garden, where she was cultivating tropical plants. He planted her head in a pot, then suspended her body among the other plants.
Bernard had later won the first prize for the best plant and prepared a long speech, only interrupted by Mrs. Bloxby. When Agatha and James discovered that he was in the navy, that he knew how to make strong rope knots and that he was still very strong for his old age, they confronted him at his place. Bernard first denied, then betrayed himself when Agatha told him that the police find he was the murderer thanks to the rope. He then exposed the whole plot and James contacted the police. Bernard then poisoned his new fishes and pretended he had to collect something upstairs. He then poisoned himself and died before getting to the hospital. His funerals was then organized.
