Gustav was not impressed by Sir Charles Fraith's fiancée, Mary Brown-Field, as he believed she was not good enough for Sir Charles. To make matters worse, her parents later moved into Barfield House. He found the Brown-Fields to be very demanding, with each family member having a particular way they wished for Gustav to address them by.

When Agatha Raisin called round to Barfield House, unaware that Charles was away in London for his stag party, Gustav saw an opportunity to get some help. With the Brown-Fields around, Gustav discreetly ushered Agatha into the butler's pantry for a private conversation. He explained to Agatha his hatred of the Brown-Fields and how he was worried that Mary and her family were destroying Charles. (BOOK: Agatha Raisin: Hot to Trot)
